David E. Shi Center for Sustainability:
The Center addresses economical, social, & ecological sustainability, using cutting-edge technologies in the building while producing a 250% surplus of on-site renewable energy. While the economics of this level of renewable energy production are difficult for most conventional building applications, the Cliffs Cottage should soon serve as a prototype for a cost-effective, carbon-neutral built environment. Furman's ecological education, program, and outreach are done through the Cliffs Cottage at Furman & the Duke Solar Learning Center. During the 1st year, this center serves as Southern Living's 1st Green Showcase Home, which they presented as their, “most innovative showcase home ever.” Now in the final stage of LEED Certification and seeking LEED for Home Platinum certification.
